Before you dive into the below content, I’ve created a video for you about liver detox and how coffee enemas can help. Click the PLAY button below to get started.
Well, this certainly is not a post I ever thought I’d write. Ever.
So, there’s a reason for today’s post. A few years ago when I was trying to detox my liver, I had read about coffee enemas and how they are used to pull toxins out of the liver for a rapid detox to support your body in removing Lyme and other toxins. I was intrigued but swore I’d never do it. Ever.
Then my Lyme disease got so bad that I was on my bathroom floor in so much pain that I couldn’t even function. I was going through what is known as a Herx reaction and “Die-off”, which is when you’re killing the ‘bad bugs’ aka Lyme or other toxins so rapidly that your liver can’t flush out the toxins fast enough. For me, I was dealing with crazy migraines, crying and exhaustion to the point that I couldn’t function. I needed relief. I was desperate. Desperate enough to put coffee in the other end? Well, sorry folks. Yes, that’s how bad it got. I had no other choice.
So, today I’m sharing with you a post about how to detox your liver in a way that I’ve seen profound benefits from. A treatment that has allowed me to remove toxins so that my body can do the hard work of healing instead of fighting off and trying to release the toxins itself. This, my friends is why a healthy detox can be so important for people in their healing journey- because you want to give your body as much energy as possible so it can do it’s job to heal you. Just like when you have a cut on your finger, your body knows how to heal that! But in the case of bigger, more complicated health issues, your body gets SO overwhelmed from just trying to kill off the bad bugs and your liver is overburdened, so today I’m sharing an easy way to support your liver. I do not recommend you do a coffee enema every day.
Talking to Your Doctor
Please talk to your Integrative/Functional MD about adding in this protocol before you start. When I was going through the Lyme, I had to do a coffee enema daily for 2 years just to survive and make it through my day. Yes, that’s how bad it was. AND that’s how amazing the relief was every day. But I stopped the enemas last year when I started to feel better. Why? Because they’re a lot of work and they also deplete your colon from nutrients that you need, which is why you should only do a coffee enema if it’s needed for detox. Now, I do a coffee enema on Saturday and/or Sunday to detox me from my week and keep my body humming along! I don’t crave them or need them like I did, which is amazing and magical all at the same time.
So, now that you’re armed with the WHY I did coffee enemas to keep me from jumping out a window with the amount of “Die-off” I had, I’ll share HOW to do it so you can try this at home, if desired.
You should have seen the look on my parents face when I told them this is why I was making coffee on their stove-top one morning when I was at their home. Ha. They’ve come around, to say the least. There were days when I was too sick to get out of bed and my mother would make the coffee for me because she was amazed at how I bounced up and into life as soon as I did it. She called it ‘The Exorcist’. It was wild to say the least…
Now, when clients come to me with toxic symptoms, this is the very first thing we do because the results are profound!
Is Your Liver Toxic?
If you read my book, Eating Clean, there is a test in the book that asks specific questions for you to answer to find out whether you are toxic or not. If you do not have my book, I highly suggest you purchase it to take this test. Here are a few symptoms of a toxic liver:
- Bad breath
- Acne
- Weight loss or unable to gain weight
- Constipation
- Digestion Issues
- Brain Fog
- Anger/Rage/Irritable
- Chronic fatigue
- High cholesterol
- Frequent colds
- Coated tongue
- Gas
- Allergies
- Slow metabolism
FYI- Constipation is VERY toxic for the body because your body needs to have at least 1-2 bowel movements each day to remove those toxins. If you are constipated, toxins are sitting in your colon and that’s not a pretty picture, folks! Check out my Constipation Program for more information if you are experiencing symptoms.
Your body can heal. Doing a coffee enema is releasing YEARS and DECADES of accumulated toxins in your body. Your body can heal, remember that!
What does a Coffee Enema do?
We’re surrounded by so many toxins on a daily basis that it’s key to support your body in detoxing. As I mention in my book, Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body, there are numerous ways to detox. Infrared saunas and Epsom salt baths are two ways but coffee enemas have had the most profound impact on me, so that’s what we’re focusing on today.
The benefits of a coffee enema will probably surprise you. Here are a few benefits:
- Detoxes your liver.
- Boosts energy.
- Eliminates parasites.
- Cleans out your colon.
- Improves digestion.
- Helps release “Die-off” symptoms.
- Helps your body function better so you can heal and recover from any health issues.
- Releases migraines/headaches.
- Reduces the amount of toxins in your body, which are the cause of hundreds of health issues.
- Increases your MAIN DETOXIFIER, aka: Glutathione.
How do you do a Coffee Enema?
Let’s just say that EVERY time I did a coffee enema when I was sick, I immediately felt relief ALL over my body, especially my crazy migraine that immediately dissipated. I felt ALIVE for the first time in over a decade because all my toxins were literally flushed out of me.
The MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT COFFEE ENEMAS IS THAT YOUR COFFEE MUST, MUST, MUST, MUST, MUST, MUST, MUST BE ORGANIC. REPEAT AFTER ME. DO NOT USE CONVENTIONAL COFFEE- IT IS SO TOXIC AND FILLED WITH A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF TOXINS AND PESTICIDES. PLEASE ONLY USE ORGANIC COFFEE AND FILTERED WATER. DO NOT USE TAP WATER BECAUSE THAT IS FULL OF TOXINS AND FLUORIDE, AS WELL- WHICH WILL NOT BE PRETTY IF YOU USE THEM!
What do you need for a Coffee Enema?
Here’s what you’ll need (click on the links below to see the exact brands that I use/trust):
- Organic Coffee (This is my favorite brand that I trust)
- Filtered Water (This is my favorite and only water filter that I trust)
- Glass or Ceramic Large Dedicated Pot-I dedicate one pot to coffee for my enemas so that food scum and yuckiness doesn’t get on the pot.
- Strainer
- Enema Bag
- Organic Coconut Oil
- Organic Coffee Filters (for traveling to use the coffee machine in your hotel room). See below for traveling tips.
Contrary to what you may have learned, taking herbal supplements will NOT quickly detox your body, however a coffee enema WILL! The coffee enema can be done with less coffee. If 2 Tbsp. is too strong for you (ex: if you feel shaky or jittery after you do it—similar to the feeling of drinking too much caffeine, then lower the amount of coffee you use).
Coffee enemas don’t just detox the liver but they detox the colon, as well. Here’s the drill. Please do this before 12:00PM so that the caffeine does not keep you awake when you are trying to sleep that evening.
The Steps of a Coffee Enema:
- Cook 2 Tbsp. of organic coffee on the stove-top with 4 cups of filtered water.
- Strain coffee and discard the coffee grounds.
- Place cooked (and cooled) coffee into the enema bag.
- Add filtered water if needed.
- Go into the bathroom and lock the door.
- If you have low blood sugar, eat before you do the enema.
- Do this in the bathtub or on a thick towel on the floor near the toilet in case you leak.
- Light a candle and put on soft music (search Satnum Kaur on youtube) to relax your body so you can enjoy the process. Put some coconut oil on a tissue and spread it onto your butt hole, where you are inserting the enema.
- Insert the enema into the colon and retain it for 15-20 minutes. NOTE: You won’t be able to hold it for this long the first few times you do an enema because you’ll have SO much junk inside of you so get ready to hit the toilet after only a few minutes. You’ll gradually work up to 15-20 minutes.
- Release on the toilet and flush.
- Stay close to the toilet for the next 30 minutes or so just in case you need to release more from your colon.
- Drink lots of purified water mixed with sea salt (through your mouth) or bone broth to hydrate yourself throughout the day so you don’t get dehydrated.
- Smile.
How do you do Coffee Enemas while traveling?
Yep. I travel and sometimes still do travel with my enema bag and organic coffee and filter. It’s easier than you think. I bring my enema bag in my suitcase. One time the TSA folks had to search my bag and they pulled it out and I almost died of laughter. Hysterical. Oh, the joys of detoxing!
I hope this post was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Always happy to help any of you that I can.
Big hugs!

Hi Amie , you are doing wonderful job in writing this article in order to make the public aware of this very good way of cleaning your liver.
I was diagnosed with pancreatic tumor in Dec 2018 good it’s benign but it’s growing and my oncologists wanted immediately surgery but I can’t do surgery because I have healing problem, so searching what’s the best option I can across Gerson therapy which is juicing n staying away from any protiens products also include coffee enema, and as you described was really true, after my first coffee enema I really feel so different, yes jumping, running or in other words moving fast with energy, my husband told me slow down a bit. I was really full of energy, detox my liver that my tumor stop growing and hopefully I will be able to shrink it, I will have my MRI this coming January 2020, and hoping…. Mind you I don’t accept contrast just plain MRI as the contrast is another toxic to add to my body. In conclusion, I’m so much better, feel good happy with full of energy, can wake up early which I could never do it before. I been doing coffee enema for a year now every morning so maybe like you after I got the result this coming month I maybe do it weekly as maintenance. I admire you for doing this website to help people who wants to be heath. Actually I’m doing my enema, and while waiting for the coffee I come across you site and start reading then now while sitting, I started writing to share my experience too. Sincerely yours, Maria
Hi Maria – thank you so much for sharing! I’m glad to hear that you’re doing better and that you’ve found protocols that work for you. Best wishes for a healthy and happy 2020!
How often should you do one? Are there protocols to follow when you first start doing them? I just did my first and do not know how long I should wait to do another one.
Hi Gina! You should work with an Integrative MD to develop a protocol that works for your body. I did them daily for years, but now I only do them once a week.
Maria, I hope you are still with us. Give us an update on how you are doing? It was a rough year for everyone on the planet… but would love to hear some good news about yourself.
I had eight years of Lyme disease increasing, and trying everything to kill off the pathogens. MMS, Jim Humble(NASA engineer) uses this which is the water purifier called chlorine dioxide (2 oxygen) to cure malaria in 24 hours in Africa and S. America. The AMA – American medical association, will not allow it’s use because it cures every known pathogem disease, over 600.
This cured my Lyme problems mostly over 6 WEEKS, the remainder of problems disappeared over the next year while I went back to the gym and got back in shape. Incredible value, for almost free ($20/ 6 months).
It’s the most common American city water purifier and camping water purifier, but used extra strong. Follow the Jim Humble protocol online if you want to try it. (I’m not a doctor and not diagnosing, go to an expert for that. I’m just sharing what helped me and thousands of others).
Thanks for sharing, Brent!
And it is effective?
Yes, it has worked wonders for me! Every one is different so you should talk to your doctor before you try.
Hi Amie,
I was wondering if you knew how long the coffee liquid lasts in the fridge. I made up extra liquid and have yet to get around to using it. It’s about a week old.
Thank you
Hi Natalie! We recommend using fresh coffee, but you can try it and see how your body reacts!
Hello Amie – thank you for this informative walkthrough! I tried it today, and have felt sluggish and tired afterwards….do you have any ideas why that could be? Do some folks get detox-overload the first time they do it, but feel better with subsequent tries?
Hi Michelle! Yes, it may be that you need to do it more than once, but we recommend talking with an integrative medicine doctor first!
I hope this does not suggests that the cooked coffee is strained thru coffee filter. Coffee filter should never be used to strain the coffee, organic or not. The coffee should be strained with only cheese cloth. The coffee filler removes the oils that ate absolutely essential for detax and healing. Please go watch the video of the Gerson Institute.

I bought organic coffee pods and made it with mineral water. I didn’t have much of a detox experience like the ones described here, like I was hoping. I don’t have any digestive issues. Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong? I really want to detox my liver. Thanks for your help!
Hi Vera!
I just responded to your comment below. Let me know how it goes! xx
Hi Amie,
I really do not fancy doing this myself, is there anywhere that offers the service of a coffee enema?
Hi Ryan, You can go to get a colonic and ask if they can use coffee after they use water!
I felt the same way about enemas before I did one. Quiet the health hack for sure 🙂 I tell my clients I work with in my spiritual organization to consider going and getting one done or doing one themselves.
I totally agree Ingrid! Thanks for being here. xx
I bought organic coffee pods and made it with mineral water. I didn’t have much any deep experience like the ones described here, like I was hoping. I don’t have any digestive issues. Abby thoughts on what I could be doing wrong? I really want to see my liver
Hi Vera,
I don’t suggest using coffee pods. I suggest using the coffee suggested here. I hope that helps. Let me know how that goes! xx
Can distilled water be used? Also in the beginning when you may be doing daily for a week or 2 do you need to drink or do anything special?
Hi Diane,
I suggest you do not use distilled water because that wipes the minerals out of your body whether you drink it or use it for an enema! xx
Hi Amie,
I just ordered my supplies. How long should the coffee be cooked? Should it be boiled? Simmered? Etc…
Thank you! 🙂
Gail
I too would like to know how long to cook..etc
You can cook the coffee until it boils for about 5-7 minutes!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this blog. It gives me hope to have read your story. I suffer from chronic pain, fibromyalgia and chronic migraines. I’ve been a mess ever since my neck surgery five years ago and have been on a lot of steroids and pain pills. I have had a lot of procedures also. I am seeing a TCM doctor now and she says my liver and spleen is really bad and I have very bad toxins. I have been doing coffee enemas on and off for awhile. I always feel better when I do them but as you said it is a lot of work. Your story gives me the encouragement to work harder to getting myself fixed. I had a few questions tho. I think I normally boil the coffee for 5-10 minutes. I saw your previous reply that you only have to bring the coffee to a boil which normally takes 5-7 minutes, is that correct? Also I have only done 2.5-3 cups of coffee. We’re you always able to do 4 cups with your enemas? I also think I was making the enemas too strong and maybe that’s why I can only do 2.5-3 cups. I boiled a TB per cup.
How long do I do this detox for?
Hi Natalia,
I do it every weekend. It’s great for your liver anytime!
i’ve been taking herds for liver fluke since august did my first 2 coffee enemas and had little result till 4-5 hrs later and die off symptoms got worse- im assuming it takes a few days or weeks till i feel the benefit in my body because i want to get out of my own body right now (42 yrs of toxins, ibs, constipation etc!)
Hi Lisa,
Hmmm; I’ve never heard of that. Maybe take a break. Are you working with an alternative medicine practitioner? xx
You know, Gerson therapy recommends 2-5 coffee enemas per day when you are detoxing cancer, and my husband did two sometimes when he had Lyme and was in a severe state. If you have that parasitic die-off several hours later, why not do another coffee enema just after and get the maximum benefit from it?
I agree; I did 3 per day when my die-off was too much to handle. It’s best to do what works for you!
Hi Amie – I don’t have a water filter except for the one on my fridge. Would this be safe to use until I can save up money to purchase the Berkey? Thank you.
Unfortunately it’s not. I wish I could say yes. Those don’t filter out what you need filtered.
Hi Amie,
I wonder would you recommend enemas when on your period?
Thanks for sharing,
Hugs
M@M
I don’t do them when I have my period because your liver is already under stress when you have your period. Hope that helps! oxx
I do them while on my cycle.. they actually help with the pain of my cycle and help me get rid of the extra hormones..
The uterus is also a detoxifying organ, and doing the Coffee enema can aid in this detox , thus reducing your toxic load, reducing heavy menstruation, helping to relieve cramps.
Hello, yesterday I made my first coffee enema. Is it normal to have a strong sweating on the extremities especially on the feet soles, completely wet with sweat while I was holding the liquid in the colon (a little more than 1 quart) for 10-15 minutes? Is it a sign that toxins were coming out of my body? And this kind of enema seem more difficult to hold for me respect to my 2qts chamomile enema (I had a lot of cramps and some tears, never experienced with chamomile, which is for me pleasant and relaxing). Is it normal?
Hi Debby,
I’ve never heard of that happening. I’ve never done a chamomile enema; what is that? Why would you use chamomile? I only use organic coffee! oxx
Chamomile enemas are cleansing for the colon and help the colon to relax. Chamomile is recommended in Gerson Therapy as an additive to coffee enemas or an additional enema before the coffee enema for people who have trouble holding coffee enemas for the necessary 12-15 minutes. Debby, if you are still having trouble with coffee enemas, why not try adding chamomile to them or doing a chamomile enema just before the coffee enema to help you?
I’ve never tried Chamomile but I’ve heard it’s amazing!
Yes, it happens to me when I’m super toxic. Like if I ate out, had a large portion of cheese, processed foods or had a big dessert, basically eating bad. I sweat, like drip… and sometimes I almost puke, but man.. after I feel like a while new person.
You mention needing coconut oil but I don’t see where it is mentioned in your instructions. What do you do with it?
I just read the article myself & have the same question. What is the coconut oil for?
It’s for your colon if you need a little lube to help get the enema in! x
Hi Amie, I did the coffee enema starting with 1 teaspoon of coffee. I have done it once before a long while back, but I recall being a bit jittery afterward as I’m. sensitive to coffee so I appreciated this advice to start with less. However, I could only retain the enema more than a few mins! Last time I recall it being uncomfortable to retain but managed 15mins, this time more like 3~6 mins only. Im wondering if that’s normal, if it would’ve had any effect at all or not and whether it will just build up over time. Any guidance is appreciated thank you!
Hi Raju! So glad this helped you. Yes – totally normal. You’ll be able to work up to 15min over time as you keep doing them.
You put it on your but before you put it the enema for lubrication. She said it
The coconut oil is to use for lube to insert enema
Amie we are remodeling a kitchen and want to put in a structured water system under the sink. I didn’t see that the Berkey was for under the counter and is there one you recommend such as Aqualiv???
Here is the link for the water filter: https://thehealthyapple.com/13-simple-ways-to-detox-your-home/
But if you need under the counter, you can use https://www.tyentusa.com/products/ionizers
Enjoy! oxxx
Is a coffee enama better than a salt water flush?
Yes I don’t like the salt water flushes; they’re painful for me and cause gas and bloating. The coffee is much smoother and easier. It’s also for your liver, which the salt flush is just your colon. xx
Perfect detox for the weekend to recharge yourself, awesome thank you.
Enjoy!
Am Donald, I am testifying about a great hebal man that cured my wife of hepatitis B, and liver cirhosis. his name is Dr oniha. I have been doing coffee enemas as part of the GAPS protocol. My question is, is it harmful to hold a coffee enema for longer than 15 – 20min? I like to do yoga nidra While doing coffee enemas and sometimes the meditations are fairly long, like up to 40 to 60 minutes. I occasionally feel a tight cramp but with deep breath it passes and I am able to continue the meditation. Thank you for your response.
