There is only one water filter that I absolutely love. It’s the only filter I trust that removes fluoride, chemicals, heavy metals and other toxins found in tap water, all of which over time contribute to the toxicity in our body.

Drinking bottled water from your health food store and feeling like it’s the best option? Sadly, I thought this was once healthy, too.

Think again.

Toxic molecules from plastic bottles can get into the water and bottled water isn’t regulated so the water can be even more toxic that the water that comes out of your kitchen sink.

A few years ago I realized how much junk was in tap water. How did I not know this until I was 30? I thought tap water was perfectly fine until I learned how much was floating around in there.

Now, I use a home water filter and I fill up a stainless-steel water bottle so I can bring along my own bottled water.

The crazy part is that you don’t just drink your tap water, you also bathe in it and wash your dishes in it. Yuck! Since your skin is your biggest organ, you don’t want all of those toxins in tap water seeping into your skin, do you? For this reason (and as I talk about in my book, Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body, I use a shower filter. This is the one that I use and I love it.

I’ve used and tried many different water filters but there is only one that I believe truly works and lasts. I’ve been using this filter for over six years and it’s made a huge difference in the way I feel, the way my skin looks and the level of toxicity that was once in my body. I love the Berkey filter for my drinking water because it filters out all of the junk and toxicity lurking in our tap water that we’re all unaware of.

So, why should we be filtering our water? What’s really lurking around in there?

Trichloroethylene along with many other industrial chemicals gets into the groundwater from industrial runoff. This can seriously impact your immune system and can increase inflammation as well as produce antibodies against your own tissues, leading to an autoimmune condition.

You’ll also find chlorine and bromine, both of which inhibit iodine (which is ideal and needed for a healthy thyroid) in tap water.

Moreover, our water contains fluoride. Many years ago, we thought that fluoride was healthy for our teeth but the dentists were incorrect. Fluoride depletes your iodine supply and the type of fluoride used is not the natural calcium fluoride that we once thought was good for our teeth but a toxic waste product that comes from aluminum manufacturers called sodium fluoride. Sounds disgusting, doesn’t it? The fluoride in your water should be removed by your filter so make sure that whatever filter you purchase, that it removes fluoride because many filters do not. This is why I trust the two filters mentioned above and below because I can trust them to remove fluoride and other toxins from my water.

All of these toxins effect our immune system, our thyroid and our overall health, including our teeth!

My suggestion?

Get a filter on your kitchen and bathroom sinks and if you live in a home, get yourself a whole-house water filtration system. Again, I really like the Berkey filter because it doesn’t require an under-the-sink set up and this filter can sit on your counter top in your home or office. It’s easy and it lasts!

Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this inspires you to clean up your water- not just your food.

  1. Hi Amie! Thank you for re-sharing this blog post on Facebook. I am curious which one of the products do you use and how do you feel about the visual appearance and amount of space it takes up in your kitchen? We have always used brita although love this idea as we do keep the container on our countertop and like room temperature water. Had never thought of something with larger storage as my husband and I do go through a lot of water every day.

    1. Hi Robin! Thanks for reaching out. I’ve used a couple of their filters. I like the travel if you don’t have a lot of space but I’ve never minded it on the counter. They are stainless steel so that might match your kitchen appliances. Berkey’s customer support is really great; they can help you figure out what might work best for you.

  2. Hello Amie, thank you once again for your great blog and all the precious advices. After reading your book I decided to purchase a filter to purify the water we use. I know you like Berkey and I think it might be one of the best options out there, but I wanted to ask you: what is your opinion on “Brita Basic On Tap Faucet Water Filter System” – or Brita in general?
Thank you, I wish you all the best

  3. Dear Amie,
I did buy your book but have not started the 21 day cleanse as the book is about 3 inches thick and became intimidated. However, I have a bone disease “osteogenesis imperfecta” with over 35 broken bones and 7 sets of metal. I recently moved to Corpus Christi and broke my breast bone with the doctor telling me the only way to fix it was to have a breast plate implanted which I immediately started shaking my head no as there is no way another piece of metal is going into me unless I call 911 and am up to God’s graces of a doctor because I am out of my mind in pain. So here I am with GERD, IBSD and serious arthritis throughout. Two left arm surgeries have left my arm useless except to hold a 9 to 9.5 pain level 24/7 and my right arm with “frozen shoulder”. The arthritis is what is killing me besides the metal. Inflamation. I so appreciate your thoughts and words. Thank you and keep telling me your stories.

    1. Hi Susan,
Lovely to hear from you; I’m happy to work with you as a client. I’m sending you so much love and hope you can get some relief soon. xx

  4. Hey, Amie!

Although I think that faucet water undergoes a certain process and filtration, it is just as important to use water filter to ensure safety. This is such a great post and I’m glad you have shared it.

    Regards,
    Nicky
