I don’t write about seafood because of my decade of struggling with getting heavy metals out of my body and realizing that so much of the sushi and seafood I ate caused a lot of my health issues. But, today I’m really excited because I’m finally introducing healthy alternatives to sushi and other big fish that are full of heavy metals. Enter: Sardines. I was never a sardine fan until I started to trust my intuition and I’ve slowly started adding in new foods to my lifestyle, which I’ve been talking about on Instagram.

I never ever ever thought I’d be adding in sardines or grass fed beef or fruits or sweet potatoes and other veggies that I couldn’t eat for years but I am! And it feels so good. I was so restricted for so long with the foods that I could eat and my meals were so boring. I did my best to make my food taste good but it was really an awful decade of bland veggies and steamed chicken. So, that said, I’m on a different route now with a heck of a lot more flavor and pizzazzzz on my plate. Moving forward, I’m all about nourishing my body because it’s time to listen to what my body wants and not fear flavor and new foods!

So, let me talk to you about these fancy Portuguese sardines and why we love ’em.

These aren’t just any ol’ sardines, folks.

They’re the BEST sardines. I had my mother do a little taste test when I was visiting my parents this summer and she LOVED them. If she loved ’em, I know you will too. Talk about flavor, these babies are full of flavor and they’re delicious served over salads (or one of my healthy pizza recipes). The folks behind the BELA Brand Seafood (p.s. they also sell Tuna and Mackerel for those of you who prefer another type of fish) source the best quality seafood from the ocean while working with local communities that fish using traditional and sustainable methods.

All of their fish is packed fresh within 8 hours of canning and sustainably wild caught so that you can experience the best tasting canned fish. Now, if any of you are thinking, “Really, canned fish?” YES, canned fish. That may not sound very appetizing to you but I assure you…it is. These sardines are packed in organic olive oil so they taste incredible and tender when you open the can.

So, why do I love sardines so much?

My Functional and Integrative MD’s used to tell me to eat sardines for Vitamin D and also for Calcium and Omega 3’s. These sardines are loaded with all three of these and they taste so much better than other brands of sardines that line the aisles of the store. These are the real deal, folks. Plus, these sardines are sold in delicious organic sauces that make it super easy to toss into any meal, whether it’s an afternoon salad or an evening pasta sauce. They’re protein-packed and full of flavor and goodness. Sounds too good to be true but it’s not. Give them a try and I guarantee your doctor with agree with you on your choice, as well. Check out my cabbage salad recipe below and let me know what you think.

Enjoy!
