The past few weeks… I’ve been watching people all around me, lovely normal people comparing themselves to other people, or who they think they should be or who they think they should look like. And then what happens? They feel bad about themselves and make choices that don’t honor who they are.Quinoa-Breakfast_0047And it makes me so sad every time I see a person reject themselves…

Do you know what I mean?

Because when anyone compares their body, business, job, bank account, relationship… whatever, to others – well, then they are really just rejecting yourself, aren’t they?

We all know that rejecting ourselves isn’t good news. And comparing ourselves to others surely isn’t either.

And I get it… I used to compare myself A LOT. I think most of us do. We just don’t talk about it.

And so this crazy comparing cycle continues.

I see it a lot here in NYC and everywhere I travel.

Girls who are 15. Women who are 50. Boys who are 28. And so forth…

So, instead of comparing ourselves to others, how about doing a few nice things this week? Here are a few that I’m going to be doing… what will do you for yourself this week?

Buying myself fresh flowers.

Treating myself to an organic green juice every day.

Staying positive. Because… it’s not easy if your health flops but stay strong and move on. I’m happy to honestly say that It’s OKAY to say that you had a bad day or that your life isn’t easy. I know what it’s like when you’re stuck not feeling well with nowhere to turn and you feel like you are going to a million doctors but no one is helping you… when you are spending all of your waking hours dedicated to your health.

I know.

I get it.

But you can go beyond that.

And treat yourself to something every day.

Even if it’s just a little sunshine or a sunflower.

Go ahead, you can do it.

And then you can dig into this fabulous gluten-free breakfast.

I mean, come on now, it’s not every day you get to enjoy a tasty quinoa breakfast, is it? Sit down, take a few extra minutes to savor your first meal of the day before you rush out the door and then  go treat yourself to something special… even if it’s just a nice bottle of seltzer with a fresh lemon.

…how does that sound to you?

Thank you for the reminder to be thankful for each of our unique gifts/strengths. I’ve been wanting to purchase the cookbook against the grain as I have been on a journey of healing my body with food from an auto immune condition called Hashimotos. I know what you mean about comparing ourselves to others. Media encourages this unproductive behavior. We need to compare and compete with ourselves more than others. Strive to be our best, or to be better.

I would enjoy winning the book because I need to get the gluten out. I am lactose intolerant and have been eating healthy since 1977 when healthy and vegetarian were considered weird and unAmerican. Working in a related grocery industry job, I see all kinds of synthetic foods that are not good for people at all. Healthy eating and lifestyle has come a long way in acceptance but there’s still plenty to go.

  17. Quinoa had become one of my most favorite things! Winning the book would be icing on the cake.

  18. I would love to win a copy of AAG!! I can’t wait to try this recipe Amie! Looks delish!

  19. 4 stars

  24. This looks awesome! I always forgot about making quinoa for breakfast! I really need to start adding it into my breakfast routine more often!

  25. These dishes look delicious, and we all need to take a little “me” time now and then. My “me” time is spent in my garden…

  26. I wonder if I could do this in the crock pot over night so it’s ready as soon as I wake up?
    Wouldn’t that be PERFECT?!

I will be 55 next month and I can count on one hand how many times in my life that someone has bought me flowers. And I am going to buy them for myself now. THanks!!!

  42. I just bought some quinoa for the first time too! Will definitely have to make this now 🙂 thanks for the awesome recipes!!!!

  43. Such a pleasure to read your column! Winning flavored peanut butter is good, too…

  44. 4 stars
I understand what you mean about “rejecting yourself,” and I think the timing of such a statement couldn’t be better. Whether it was inspired by the Miley Cyrus VMA performance or not, I feel it directly reflects the desperate cry for attention that so many of us make. And while Miley is lucky enough for her cries to be seen and heard by millions of people who want to help, many others’ cries tragically go unnoticed.

Thank you for your thoughtful gesture and concern, and I agree, it’s important to love and respect yourself for who you are. And should we aspire towards something, let that something be pure and true.

Let us all do something good for ourselves, our bodies and minds today. A delicious and healthy recipe such as your Almond Quinoa Breakfast sounds like a perfect way to get it started! Rick in protein, fiber and iron, quinoa is like a big hug! Below is a link to an article on its health benefits. Enjoy!

And I’m completely guilty of comparing myself…all the time. Thank you for the little reminder to love and treat myself. 😀

  61. 5 stars
I loved this post! I too, feel like we often compare ourselves to others so much that we run the risk of not being able to see any of the positive things we have in our lives. When we were younger, my husband and I fell into the comparing trap to the point where we had overextended ourselves and we ended up losing our house, cars, and savings. It was a rough time for us, but it taught us so much. We learned that happiness is created within and it starts with a healthy mind and body. We also found how much more fun it is to give than receive and now we are sharing this gift with our daughters. I appreciate the recipes and wisdom that you share with your readers and look forward to sharing this blog entry with others.

*on a side note, I’ve been looking for new quinoa recipes and can’t wait to try this one. (Especially with the PB give away

  113. Treating ourselves is such an important part of keeping a healthy balance in life. I wish more people would do so and not equate treating oneself with being selfish. I got rid of plastic water at home and at work then they snuck back in at work. Grrrr. Now I need to fix it! I would love to win a reusable lunch set from Mighty Nest. Fun!

  130. Great post…identify, don’t compare! And above all else, be gentle with yourself and others. 🙂

  131. Is this recipe any good re-heated? I always make my breakfast the night before. I’d also love to entered into the contest for the Discovery Kit from Odacite.

This has to be the best breakfast ever. I did chop some raw nuts for a little more protein but the combination of ingredients are perfect. Even a little vanilla bean goes a long way in this! I am raving about this gem of a website to all. Thank you for the wonderful recipes! I’m not 100% gluten free but am easing into it. Lots of great products out there!! Homemade is always best though!

I made this and it’s delicious! I am also NOT trying to win anything. My question concerns the serving size and the total amount this yealds. I know quinoa doubles but 1/2 cup only yealds 1 cup which is only 2 servings if 1/2 c is the true serving size. Curious if the servings are wrong. Thanks

my sister has to be gluten free and also antibiotic free which really limits her but we both love quinoa so this is perfect for her but i would have to leave out the cinnamon as i am allergic to it
