An Apple a Day…

Keeps the Doctor Away.

Or so they say.

Well, I’m ‘The Healthy Apple’ so take your pick on a few of these healthy apples.

Just try not to avoid the peel as this contains two thirds of their fiber and many antioxidants.

Red Delicious

Snack on these sweet apples or slice them into salads. They don’t hold up too well in baking but are delicious in fresh salads and oatmeal.

Golden Delicious

This sweet variety works well when baked and makes a great sauce.

Granny Smith

Bake these tart, juicy apples into pies or snack on them with a bit of cheese.

Gala

Use these crisp, sweet, striped apples to give salads and pilafs a sweet taste.

McIntosh

Cook these tart-sweet and firm apples into a flavorful sauce with balsamic vinegar.

So, for a quick go-to great salad, reach for a Gala or Red Delicious, which are crisp and have a browning-resistant flesh.  I also enjoy Cortland and Cameo apples in my salads, as well.

For a perfect sauce, try a McIntosh apple, which cooks down well.  You can also use Honeycup, which are sweet or Jonathan, which are tangy and spicy for marinades and sauces.

And, when you’re ready to put your baking mittens on, Rome apples are my favorite, however, Pink Lady, Idared and Ginger Gold also work just swell.

How ’bout them apples?

What is your favorite kind of apple to munch on?

And just what am I about to do with these apples? Well, I just created a delicious Gluten-Free and Vegan Apple n’ French Onion Soup that I’m loving right now…

Recipe to come on Monday so stay tuned.

Quick Tip: I’ve been on a clean sweep, perhaps it’s the Spring Cleaning Fever I’m getting but I’ve learned a little lesson that I thought I’d share called ‘Detail Your Fridge’.  Simply, dip cotton swabs in all-purpose cleaner and run them in the grooves of the rubber seals of your fridge for a clean, fresh look and feel.  Lovely, isn’t it?

  1. we snack on Granny Smith, Empire, and one other that I can’t remember, sold by Wilklow Orchards at our Green Market. It tastes like a cross between jicama and an apple, great crunch and really juicy too!
