Integrative Medicine Testing

There are many Integrative M.D.’s trained to work with patients through detox elimination, hypothyroidism, celiac disease, other autoimmune diseases and much more. It has taken me almost 10 years to find the two doctors that actually helped me feel better. I spent countless hours with Western medicine doctors telling me that nothing was wrong and it wasn’t until I switched to Integrative Medicine that I finally got answers and started healing. Just because Western (modern) medicine hasn’t yet discovered the right lab tests for you doesn’t mean you have to suffer when gluten and other toxins are wreaking havoc on your immune system.

Check out my How To Find an Integrative Medicine Doctor Page to find a doctor in your area. This is a great way to locate a doctor who practices Integrative Medicine.

Labs:

You can visit one of the Integrative Medicine lab websites below to find a practitioner who uses their services.

Testing For:

Heavy Metals:

If you want to have your heavy metals tested, you can find an Integrative M.D. who uses Doctors Data for their overnight urine collection test for heavy metals. Check out my Heavy Metal Detox Page for more information.

Inflammation:

There are numerous tests your Integrative M.D. can test for internal inflammation inside your body. These doctors can include any or all of the following:

  • TNF alpha (tumor necrosis factor)
  • CRP (C-reactive protein)
  • High-sensitivity homocysteine
  • IFG-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1)

Autoimmune Disease:

ImmunoGenomics Profile from Genova Diagnostics is a test that allows you to see if you have handicaps in your immune system that are making it hard for you to clear chronic infections from your body. Check out my How to Stay Strong When You are Diagnosed With An Autoimmune Disease Page for more information.

Celiac Disease:

GI (Gastroenterologists) will diagnose this only after a small bowl biopsy that shows damage to your villi. You may have silent celiac disease for numerous years (and decades) before this test comes out positive so this test is not 100% accurate at all times.  Instead, have your doctor test for anti-gladin antibodies (AGA) and anti-deamidated gliadin antibodies (ADGA). If either are positive, it’s a sign that an autoimmune attack is taking place in your body. If these tests are negative you may still be gluten-sensitive because these tests were designed to pick up only celiac disease and gluten can cause other autoimmune diseases, as well. Therefore if these tests are negative, it’s a good idea to remove gluten from our lifestyle. You can have a genetic test done to see if you have an increased risk of developing celiac disease called HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8. The reports will explain your risk for developing celiac disease. Check out my How to Live a Gluten-Free Lifestyle Page for more information.

Leaky Gut:

An intestinal permeability test (also called increased intestinal permeability) will confirm and determine the severity of your leaky gut. Most Integrative M.D.’s offer stool testing through Genova Diagnostics, Metametrix Laboratories, Doctors Data Laboratory and Enterolabs; I have learned that these are the best and most trusted labs to use. Find an Integrative M.D. that uses these labs for your testing and knows how to interpret the results. Check out my Leaky Gut Syndrome Page for more information.

Hypothyroidism:

Ask your Integrative M.D. to test you for TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, Anti-thyroglobulin,TSH receptor antibody and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies. It’s important to get the full thyroid panel tested because Western medicine does not run all of these tests and they are so important to understand what is going on with your thyroid and how it is functioning. Your Integrative M.D. can also determine if you have Hashimoto’s, which is an autoimmune thyroid disease where immune cells invade the thyroid.

Genes:

You can order your own saliva kit from 23andme to receive a full reading of your genes. This kit only costs $99 and you don’t have to order this from a doctor. You can simply order this test yourself on this website here: 23andme and mail in the saliva. You will get your results within 1 month. This test Reports on 240+ health conditions and traits, shows your lineage, relatives and more. It also gives you updates on your DNA as science advances.

Food Intolerances:

Check out my ALCAT testing page for more information.

MORE INFORMATION COMING SOON!

It is essential to work with a nutritionist and an Integrative M.D. because I am sharing general information that is not intended to be medical advice. This information is only given for informational purposes. I worked with Dr. Susan Blum of Westchester, NY and Dr. Jeffrey Morrison of NYC who both helped me tremendously.

  1. I am sooo impressed with the wealth of information you provide through this web site. It took me 7 yrs to finally get a correct diagnosis via a functional doctor. But I still felt he was driven by the almighty dollar too much and of course he didn’t accept insurance, so I was deep in my pockets. I have learned more through my own research than I have with any doctor. Your article is the first I’ve read that provides so much relevant information with excellent links for further research! You’re a gem! I am still suffering but I hope I’m closer to correcting my imbalance and hypothyroidism soon, by improving my gut health!
Thanks again for all the great sources!
