Graves' Disease

What is Graves Disease | Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Also known as hyperthyroidism, Graves’ disease happens when your body makes antibodies that stimulate your thyroid gland, causing it to secrete high levels of T4, the hormone Thyroxine.

Symptoms

  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling very warm
  • Weight loss
  • Irritability
  • Heart palpitations
  • Diarrhea
  • Rapid pulse
  • Protruding eyes

Request these tests from your integrative M.D.

  • Free T3
  • Free T4
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
  • TSH receptor antibody
  • Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI)

Typically with Graves’, you would have a low TSH and an elevated Free T4. Your Free T3 may be normal but usually is over 4.0 pg/ml. Your TSH or TSI receptor antibody will be positive. If they are both normal, then you do not have Graves’ disease.  Caution: This is just an example because every patient is different. If only one of your numbers looks out of range, such as TSH or T3, this could mean you caught the issue early (yay!) and you can work with your M.D. to heal and reverse the problem.
